I just bought a 1979 Bonneville. I test rode it for a couple miles and took it home thinking everything was fine. It starts first / second kick. It idles and accelerates well while stationary. Under load, after a half mile or so the engine sputters and dies. It won't restart until it has cooled off. The battery is charged. Once it has cooled off, it starts right away. Any suggestions or ideas?

Sounds like fuel starvation. Wouldn't hurt to pull the petcock out of tank and check it's condition. will also tell you what condition the tank is in(rust, sediment, etc).
Failing that, pull the carbs and have them cleaned.
Can also check the coil(s). May be that when they warm up a crack opens up and they quit.
The tank venting may be suspect as well. Next time you ride and it quits, try removing the cap and see if you get a suction noise. Bike may start right up after that if it's your issue. I would start with the venting first. Easiest to check.

Failing condenser give odd symptoms....are the contact breaker points sparking?
