There was a recent thread about a bird flying into a window.
I have a cottage on a fresh water lake which has a massive stone fireplace and outside chimney. In the summer time I place a ventilated cap on the chimney to keep out the weather, prevent sparks from flying and to prevent birds from coming in.
A couple of years ago a wind storm blew the cap off the chimney and a large bird of some kind managed to get inside the building. I was unaware that the cap was missing and the next time we went to the cabin I found two broken windows. At first I though the cabin had been broken into or had been vandalized. But being a fan of CSI: Las Vegas I noted that all the broken glass was on the outside :ya2:
Further investigation revealed lots of feathers and bird s**t all over the place. What a mess! From the evidence it was probably a duck or some kind of large water fowl.
It appeared that the bird flew into one window and only succeeded in breaking the glass. It obviously took a flying leap at another window and broke through it. The large pane of glass was completely shattered leaving a large hole with plenty of feathers and evidence that the bird went through and made its escape.
After that incident I now place a heavy rock on the cap to prevent it from blowing off. In the winter a solid cap seals the chimney and is held down by that same rock.
I'm good at replacing glass and glazing it, but I don't need the practice!
