My son got married on December 20, 2008 and his best man was a friend from Boston. My son grew up a computer whiz and was hacking interactive games when in grade school. After he got his degree in Media & Communications he took a Webmaster's job with an Internet Start Up in Boston in the mid-90's and at one time was apparently doing well with lots of stock options. Anyway in Boston, where the cost of living is sky high, he fell into a small group of intense, internet nerds (read Stephenson's "Cryptonomicon" for examples). Later when the whole internet thing collasped and 90% of the internet businesses went bust, he moved back to my house and then took a job repairing PCs at some overnight service in Memphis (FedEx's main hub where all laptops go for repair) until he decided to follow my advice and get a PhD.
Anyway, I had some contact with some of his friends through blog visits; I just didn't have the technical knowledge to keep up with the lingo and depth of their near daily novel length blogs, but I learned these were world-class techno-Geeks. So I kind of knew what to expect.
Anyway, I meet his best man at the wedding rehersal and he is the classic geek. About 6' tall and 300 lbs, wearing a suit that might have fit at 250 lbs and the shirt is unironed and the tie is a clip on that doesn't match anything; he's wearing some sort of tan hush puppy clog shoes with a navy blue striped suit. His hair is about 12" long and naturally frizzy and so is his beard. He looks like a mountain man ... except ... he takes small steps, is a little knock kneed (kind of holds himself like he needs to go very soon), and mostly looks down, instead of holding his head up and looking you in the eye, and then he speaks - kind of a cross between Tiny Tim, and Michael Jackson. But he also has that unmistakable aloofness that comes when someone truly doesn't
care at all about what anyone else thinks. The most surprising part of this man was that it seems every single woman at the wedding reception was chasing this guy.
I guess the moral is that maybe the more geeky you are, the better it gets.
