After reading all the hype over the years about the wonderful English football team I was surprised to see how useless they were .These guys get paid millions to do one thing ,Play football !!!They looked disjointed and they were not playing as a team.

Oh well at least the F1 was more interesting and of course Le Mans :y115:

Yes I agree still would rather watch the rugby :y18:

What "football" needs is to allow checking (hitting) like in hockey or lacrosse! It would be so much more interesting.

Seems to me that a prerequisite to be a BP chairman is the ability to totally piss off an entire nation of Americans, destroy their livelihoods and wildlife, and then complain YOU'D like to have YOUR life back!

As to those vuvuzelas I absolutely hate them. When you hear them on TV at the matches, it sounds like millions of angry bees amplified about a gazillion times. It wouldn't be so bad if they had a tune but they don't - just a bloody awful noise! I'd rather hear the traditional football songs being sung at top volume.

I could not agree more. And I also agree that the opening ceremony was disappointing.

Again, not to go too far off topic....

I would say the majority of Americans know about the fact that the oil rig that exploded was sub-contracted by BP (which let's face it is an acronym for British Petroleum). They do blame Obama for the poor response of the government. They also realize that any boycott of BP would mostly hurt Americans and that BP can't be run into bankruptcy if we ever hope for them to pay for this mess.

But 11 Americans did die on that rig and 4-5 States are suffering the consequences of all that oil destroying the tourist, shrimping, and fishing, trade. It just struck the wrong nerve when the head of BP said he'd like to get his life back....that was an insensitive remark to make while family members are attending funerals of those who really lost their lives.

I was basically just commenting upon his statement.

Geoff, I agree with AJ's synopsis. That was a very ill thought out, tasteless remark by the BP CEO.

That said, your analysis of of Obama is spot on. Obama got where he is by blaming others. That is his MO. His popularity has fallen dramatically over his pi** poor handling of the oil leak (read oil gush). He has partied and played golf while working American's lives were being destroyed.

Obama has not learned - and neither has the BP CEO - that the buck stops at the top. Both of them need to take a lesson form Harry S Truman. Regardless of how it happened and who was involved, it is BP's rig. BP is responsible. Obama has the responsibility to lead the country in finding a solution and alleviating the damage. He has totally failed. All he has done is tried to point fingers and shift blame. Further, poor US laws and poor inspections on the part of the US government set the stage for this disaster.

I still use BP products and will continue to do so.

I was flipping the TV channels and came across the Germany - Australia match so I stopped to watch a bit of it.

I heard that constant buzzing sound and was like....WTF???

Then I realized what it was. I have to admit that after about 4 minutes of that sound, I couldn't stand it anymore and switched channels. I believe others who aren't used to it would have that same reaction, so it may be counter-productive to allow it CONSTANTLY. I could understand if they did it when something exciting happened in the game, but not ALL the time!!

I see that the BBC is working on a way to mute out the noise so fans can watch and hear the commentary. I must admit when I watch a match on TV I now have the sound off completely. Sort of makes it a bit less exciting somehow. No way would I be able to sit at a live match with all that going on. BUT then I get told it is part of our culture, maybe I have too much of another culture in me to appreciate it :ya2:

England's goalie Rob Green has trained today and in 3 hours he had 4,000 shots fired at him and did not concede a single goal. Tomorrow, him and Heskey will train with the rest of the squad.

God save our gracious Green,
Long dive our nimble Green,
God save our Green!
Sliding victorious,
Hands firm and dexterous,
Stay strong and rescue us;
God save the Green!

"My daughters and I watched the SA vs. Mexico match. I was pulling for SA."

Carl,

You need to be very careful what you pull. Especially as you get older... People may get the wrong idea!!!

Am I now allowed to say it was on the cards.I watched the first half and got sick of seeing all the acting on both sides and then our guys passing the ball straight to the other team or kicking the ball to nowhere .
I was upset because I relly started to get into the spirit but our guys are way out of their league
