NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- State police are searching for an unlikely suspect in a western Pennsylvania hit-and-run accident: the driver of an Amish buggy.

Troopers from the Mercer barracks say the buggy twice hit a passenger vehicle at a crossroads on Route 158 in Wilmington Township, about 6 p.m. Sunday.

The buggy then left the scene and its driver has yet to be identified.

Even if they do catch the buggie driver, I don't know how much will come of it. The Amish don't believe in insurance so damages would have to be paid out of pocket.

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around exactly how a buggies "hits" a car and how the buggie just trots off and becomes "lost"?

I haven't got that figured out either. That is why I thought this story was so interesting - and different.

There have been no updates in the local news.

The only way I could see a buggie damaging a car while both at an intersection is if the buggie's horse backed-up a little bit while waiting for traffic and the car behind was too close. Or if the car didn't give the buggie enough room and the horse pulled a bit to the left and the buggie hubs hit the side of the car.
