I am in the market for a Triumph Bonneville T100. At a local used motorcycle shop, I found a nice Bonneville for $6K out the door for a 2010 model with 16,000 miles. Only trouble is there are 2 dents in the gas tank, and the bike appears to have been laid down on the right side, evidenced by visible scratching on the pipes. Otherwise it is mechanically sound, and full service has been performed by the sho, valves and fluids etc. The rear tire also looks a little low. I would be willing to pay about 5K out the door in cash, but they don't seem open to negotiate. I may go back this week to make an offer. How would you approach the shop owner to get the price down?

Thanks that's my impression with the shop. Have done business with them in the past selling my bike to them. But they generally try to mark up at least $1000 more than it's worth.

Based on the info you provided, $6,000 is too much for the bike. The T100 is NOT a touring bike and 16,000 miles makes it much used. Dents and scratches substantially reduce value. You did not mention any accessories added or mods made; these could increase value.

I think you should be able to find a undamaged bike with less miles for $6K.

If you really want this bike. wait until September, then walk in with $5,000 in cash. The dealer should jump on your offer by that date as the selling season will be about over and he will be facing carrying the bike until next spring when it will be a year older model.

I do not like buying a used bike from a dealer as its unlikely that you can learn the truth about how its been ridden and how it was maintained. It could have been ridden two up frequently (more strain on engine and suspension), and it may not have been serviced regularly. Sprockets may need replacement, chain may need replacement, and I would suggest checking the mfg dates on the tires.

Thanks for the advice. I agree September seems to be the buyer sweet spot when it comes to dealers. I'll definitely be holding out till then. Going to walk on this bike as a dealer a block away has a newer Bonneville undamaged and less miles for about the same price.
