Hello all,

I currently ride the above bike. Now I have run into a problem with it, the starter clutch has given out. In Australia in 1993 to versions of this bike were sold. One had a 13 pin for the Idle Gear and the other had a 15 pin Idle Gear. While this might seem a small change the 15 pin was a higher compression version. I have heard that the 13 pin motors were being up graded to the 15 pins version.

Can someone more knowledgeable with this issue please assist or point me to where I can find the correct information on this issue.

Thank you

Hi Hitcher,
The sprag clutch on the Sprint starter was a well known problem. Triumph issued four different versions before they came up with a good fix. My '94 was unfortunately one of the later type that had to have the cases split to replace it. Mine went on the first day of a biking trip and I was so P'd off I threw it in the back of the garage for a year and only rode my trusty Commando, but I digress.......... If you are lucky you will find a small "door" on top of the crankcase somewhere under the carbs that allows access to the sprag. IIRC you must order the correct 13 or 15 tooth gear. In '95 the starter was changed somehow so that the motor completed 2 revolutions before firing to allow it to get up to speed before firing. You probably experienced occasional banging from the starter usually on cool mornings or if the battery was low. This is backfiring which strains the sprag and eventually leads to failure. Your dealer should be able to order the correct (expensive) part using your VIN.

Well I must say that after looking inside the engine housing (Grrrr ), I am very please that nothing else is going on the engine. Though it seems the more I read that this part does go ever 110,000 to 120,000 km's. If that is the case I can feel very lucky that everything else is tight in the motor for age and amount of 107,000 km's.

Yes, i must say the cost of the new part is a killer at $460 and a 3 weeks wait to get here from England as in Australia there is only the 15 pin and 1 of those is avail at triumph Australia.

Thanks for getting back to me with a reply. Though I still wonder if the motor can be upgraded to the 15 pin model?

though all thing aside, this is one of the best bikes i have ever been on. shames it happemed to do this after one week of ownership. good thing though when we took her apart she was clean and tight as she could be! Looking forward to the Australian summer!!!!!

I have heard of ppl lowering the bike, worth it?
