As I approach the 6,000 mile marker for my 2014 Bonneville I'm wondering what's the best way to get it serviced. I'm wondering if any competent (cheaper) motorcycle mechanic can check the ECM (Electronic Control Module) and the DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) along w. fuel/oil leaks, brake functioning, etc. And will that detailed service receipt serve as proof of the periodic service. Thanks!
 
To check the ECM would mean he would need the equipment to do so and that would also require a bit of technical skill as well. The question is do you want to chance someone doing this that might say they have it all sorted but in reality don't.

Remember this is not like in the old days with carbs where basically they were just about the same on most bikes when it came to setting them up, rather basic in comparison to what we have now.

Bikes this new are full of electronics that only somebody with equipment and knowledge can decipher, diagnose, tune and service.
I have a 2014 Honda that is a dream to ride and is full of electronics. Should it ever stop, I'm dead in the water.

Thanks, Dave. That's kind of what I thought. Changing the oil is one thing, but messing w. onboard computers.... nah.

Thanks, Rocky. The electronics on these attractive beasts are out of sight, out of mind until they stop working. I'll spend a few more bucks and take it to the dealer.
 
what needs checking? the newest bonnies are different for sure but the air coolers are still pretty simple! get a factory service manual, change oil + filter keep receipts if under warranty. you can check what the dealer prolly dont + save $$$$
